To Make Or Not To Make?

Homemade shirt
As a fashion student, I am continuously wanting to broaden my skills, knowledge and portfolio. I have grown up with a mother who loves to dress make and in the last couple of years, I have asked her to pass on her skills. Over this time I have made a few dresses, tops and now a shirt!

I was recently rummaging through a tin trunk we have at home, filled with different fabrics my mum has collected, when I came across this pink and navy check print fabric. I thought it would be so cute as a shirt, so nipped to John Lewis to find a pattern.

After much swearing, being pin pricked, having bloody fingers (I'm still learning guys), I finished with an oversized shirt perfect for lounging around, wearing with leggings, denim shorts, yeah you get the idea...

It's not exactly like it has been bought in a shop (the seams inside haven't been over edged for example, but instead I used the zig zag function on the sewing machine so the fabric wouldn't fray). But overall, I'm pleased with the result and thought it would be something different to share with you all.

It's kind of old school making your own clothes, but it makes you realise how much effort goes in to making the garments that you wear, and it's also very satisfying and therapeutic, making something yourself that you can keep and also wear, knowing that nobody else has it!

Because it's quite time consuming, I don't get to make things very often, but am hoping to make some more garments during my summer break.

What's your opinion on making your own clothes? Totally old school? Or something unique?
