Book Review: Orange Is The New Black
Orange Is The New Black, is a true story written by Piper Kerman, a woman who over a decade before carried a suitcase of drug money to Europe, after getting mixed up with the wrong people. Piper has moved on from that part of her life, she has a career, a fiancée and a loving family, when her past catches up with her. When she finally gets a fifteen month sentence in prison, Piper's life changes in more ways than you'd expect. Piper doesn't meet the people you'd necessarily expect her to meet in prison, despite them coming from completely different backgrounds to her own. Piper becomes just an inmate number, but that doesn't mean that her relationships with her friends and family have to change.
You may have seen the series of Orange Is The New Black, which might I add, is amazing. But it is quite far from the truth. Of course, a series needs more drama and excitement. Whereas the book just makes you realise how generous, kind and incredible people can be - women can be, more to the point. This book is not just about Piper's life inside, it's about friendship, and the realisation that people should most certainly not be judged by their appearances.
This is a book I will never forget about. It is heart-warming, tear jerking and honest. Piper has laid her life in prison out on the table for the world to know about, and she has created a story that is thought-provoking, and pretty darn brilliant!
Whether you've watched the series or not, you gotta read this!
I'm obsessed with OITNB :)
